Scarborough & The Community
We have always been active in our local Scarborough community, but over the past three years, we have expanded our activities across our whole heartland – from Middlesbrough in the north east, across to Leeds and south to Nottingham.
We believe we have a responsibility to enhance the quality of life of people living in the communities in which we operate and, as such, have tailored our Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) policy to fit the needs of our heartland.
As part of our commitment to Corporate Social Responsibility and demonstrating modern mutuality, Scarborough pledges 1% of pre-tax profit annually to good causes, which are chosen by our Sponsorship & Donations Committee.
This amount is split into donations which are given out both centrally and through our Branches, each of which chooses its ‘Charity of the Year’ – linking with an organisation within their local community.
Over the years we have created relationships with charities of all sizes – from the UK’s leading family support charity, Home-Start UK, and the regional Yorkshire Wildlife Trust, to Zoë’s Place, a children’s hospice in Middlesbrough; Rodley Nature Reserve Trust in Leeds and the Scarborough Cricket Club summer training programme.
Due to the overwhelming number of applications we get each year we have to select carefully which good causes to support and have a set of criteria for donations. For, example, charities must be physically located in, and offer benefit to, our heartland area. They must also be aligned to one of the three main strands of our CSR policy, which are:
- Financial Education;
- Culture & Environment;
- Quality Employment
