Financial Education

Scarborough has launched a schools programme to equip members of the future generation to manage their finances effectively for a more stable future.

With contemporary society characterised by unprecedented, and growing, debt levels, we believe we have a responsibility as a building society to play our part in educating the next generation to manage their finances responsibly.

One of the ways in which we are doing this is by producing personal finance education packs for schools in the Greater Scarborough area.

Working with the North Yorkshire Business Education Partnership (NYBEP) , we have compiled a set of workshops and teachers' notes, which our employees are set to present side-by-side with school staff.

To accompany the workshops, we have also developed a funky, interactive computer game called Young Finance Manager, which aims to prepare youngsters for 'real world' finances in a fun way.

These educational resources, including Young Finance Manager, are also available to download by both teachers and parents across the country who need a little help in passing on some financial good sense. In addition to this proactive educational initiative, we have a number of long term partnerships with Scarborough schools. For George Pindar Community Sports College, we have sponsored the purchase of sports kits for every pupil, and our three-year sponsorship agreement with Graham School Science College is enabling them to purchase two interactive whiteboards per year.

Through our unique Family Saver product, we also give £1 for every account opened at our Hull Branch to the Kingston upon Hull Children's University , to support the creation and delivery of an after-school-hours personal finance education module to pupils of one local school each year.
