If you think you know the answers to the questions above, you might want to take a look Scarborough's new personal finance education resource, the ‘Young Finance Manager’ computer game – complete with its pfeg Quality Mark seal of approval.

In response to Government's increasing push to prepare the next generation to manage their finances responsibly, Scarborough created the game, and supporting materials, to assist teachers in providing effective support to students.

To make sure the resource is up to date and relevant, we have been working with local teachers, NYBEP and pfeg throughout the research and design process to ensure the game meets their needs.

Developed in line with our new Corporate Social Responsibility Policy's Financial Education strand, the game uses terms and situations which occur in real life, giving today's teenagers an early insight into the opportunities and pitfalls of personal financial management.

In addition to the development of the resources themselves, we are planning to make the educational experience more real through the Society's volunteering programme. This will see members of staff from across the business helping to introduce the game in schools and sharing their professional and personal knowledge with students, to bring what is seen as a ‘boring’ subject to life.

The new data has incorporated all the new tax and National Insurance bands for the current year, which changes all the characters’ budgets. We have also increased the cost of some of the shopping items, to make the game as realistic as possible. In addition, we have taken onboard feedback regarding some of the statistical data questions, which have been updated to make them more current and relevant to today's market.

You will also need the new data file if you are downloading Young Finance Manager for the first time, to ensure that you have the current version installed.

We have also produced a workbook to compliment the Young Finance Manager game. Covering topics from tax levels to credit cards, the workbook contains explanatory information and questions to ensure that what has been read is understood by students. A Teachers version of the workbook is also available on request.
